Egypt arrests Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie - Times of India

CAIRO: Egyptian security forces arrested the Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood on Tuesday, continuing their crackdown on the group.

Mohamed Badie, 70, was detained at an apartment in Nasr City in northeast Cairo near the Rabaa al-Adawiya Mosque. This was the site of one of the two major sit-ins which the security forces forcibly dispersed last Wednesday.

Most of the Muslim Brotherhood's top leaders, including Khairat Shater the chief strategist and financier of the Brotherhood, have been jailed or are in hiding. At least 8,00 people have been killed by security forces since Islamist President Mohamed Mosri was ousted in a military-backed coup on July 3.

Much of the Muslim Brotherhoods followers are now calling themselves a part of the anti-coup alliance, an umbrella group the Brotherhood organized to protest Morsi's downfall.

The Facebook page of the Interior Ministry displayed a picture of Badie, with dark rings under his eyes, sitting in a car between two men in black body armour, with a caption confirming his arrest.

"Carrying out the decisions of the public prosecutor to arrest and bring forward the general guide of the Muslim Brotherhood Mohamed Badie, and through collected information and observation of movements it was possible for the criminal search apparatus under the direction of Cairo's security (services) to arrest him," the caption said.

"The necessary legal measures are being taken," it added.

Badie was charged in July with incitement to murder over allegations that Brotherhood supporters killed protesters attacking the organisation's headquarters during the demonstrations that led to Mr Morsi's removal on June 30. He is due to stand trial on August 25.

Muslim Brotherhood has named an interim leader to head the group after its supreme guide was arrested on Tuesday, the website of its political party said.

"Mahmoud Ezzat, deputy leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, will assume the role of supreme guide of the group on a temporary basis after the security forces of the bloody military coup arrested supreme guide Mohamed Badie," the Freedom and Justice Party website, the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood said.
